The Steps of the Righteous Person

Jesus asked His followers, “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? (Lk. 6:46). Jesus gave evidence in this teaching that following Him and calling Him Lord were not sufficient demonstrations of His standards for disciples. Disciples are those who understand and submit to the Lordship of Christ with authentic demonstrations of His teachings. He desired disciples who hear His words and put them into practice. Jesus highlighted the importance of hearing, seeing, and then doing in other teachings (Luke 8:8). His disciples also emphasized the need of putting God’s Word into practice (Rom. 2:13; James 1:22).
Therefore, a discipleship program that includes a component that facilitates training in an orientation to the Lordship of God and the practical application of His teachings is in keeping with the learning outcome that Jesus and the early church demonstrated.
