By Pas. Henry & Dr. Cytella Francis

It’s that time again! Back to school. This time of year can often be stressful and a bit anxiety-ridden for both parents and students. However, for disciples of Christ, the learning experience can be life-giving, engaging, and enjoyable.

Being a disciple means being a committed learner. As a result, we get to spend a lifetime learning from the greatest Teacher that ever lived while being transformed into His image. Admittedly, some schools train the head, but God trains both head and heart. No matter what type of learning experiences we may have had in the past or even now, Jesus is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11) and the Light of the world (John 8:12). He knows what we need now and for the future and can lead us at a pace and on paths that are suitable for us (Ps. 23). Our FBI research on the Shepherd is a good resource tool for understanding how God cares for His sheep, knowing our special individual needs.

David praised God as his light and salvation (Ps. 27:1). God took David through various phases of life that demonstrated that He was guiding Him and qualifying Him for what was ahead. For this reason, David said, “Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident” (Ps. 27:3). David was not afraid of challenging times because God had brought him through difficulty in the past and had enlisted him in His plan for the future. In his head, he could understand that trouble might be on the horizon, but in his heart David knew God was faithful to those who trust in Him.

If you are a parent, remember that the Kingdom is here now. No lack exists in a kingdom with the King that brings justice. Therefore, He can supply your need. However, consider how God can use your knowledge and past faith experiences to help guide your children. Parents and teachers are shepherds.

Kingdom-ParentingIn the book, Kingdom Parenting, Dr. Munroe discussed the great place of influence that parents have in their children's lives.
Parents are God's agents for producing righteous, godly seed. As you seek and trust God to supply their material needs, remember to pass on the things that are eternal. Let the Good Shepherd help you be a good shepherd as well.

For the adult student, keep in mind that the role of the school is different from the role of God. While continuing education is important and is often a requirement for a promotion in the marketplace, God is the One who gives you the power to become His child and orders your ultimate success (John 1:12; Gen. 39:2-3). School can refine skills, but God controls your destiny.
